One of my most vivid memories and proudest achievements from childhood was my Year 6 teacher picking out my story and reading it out to the class. I wrote something different and my classmates loved it due to the surprise ending. But growing up in an Asian household, becoming an author/illustrator never seemed like a valid career choice.
It was surprising because for the longest time, I’ve always felt like I was better with numbers than playing with words. I did the most logical thing and completed a degree in Commerce-Accounting. I became a qualified Chartered Accountant in 2014. Throughout all these years, I’ve never lost that burning desire to create something different. I was constantly reading everything I could get my hands on: memoirs, novels, plays, scripts, poetry, and occasionally the odd children’s book. This was invigorating and felt right. Fast forward 7 years in the corporate world and I’ve decided to take some time off to focus on writing, illustrating, publishing and marketing my own set of children’s books.
And I assure you, my books will be unlike any other on the market.
As Beverly Cleary once said, “If you don’t see the book you want on the shelves, write it”. I don’t want to turn 50 and be looking back full of regrets. I want to do something that for the longest time, I’ve always dreamed about. I want to do something that will make a difference. More importantly, I want to do something that I will be proud of when looking back 10 years, 20 years, or even 30 years from now.
My debut children’s book, THE TWIG AND THE THREE-LEGGED PIG, was published on 4 October, 2017 on Amazon. A PHOENIX FOR SALE is scheduled for a tentative release date by the end of March 2018. Three more books are planned to be released by the end of each quarter in 2018.
